Bette Lou Higgins presents “Grandma Gatewood” live

Tomorrow marks the debut of the just completed narrative script c0-written by Bette Lou Higgins and Kelly Boyer Sagert as a one person live presentation. This third person script and show is based on the research and interviews we conducted with Lucy Seeds (Emma Gatewoods youngest daughter) and Marjorie Wood (Emma’s  grand daughter). The event is an important achivement in the quest to create a documentary film about Emma’s life. We certainly need your help to spread the word and hopefully support our project. If you would like to make a donation, Eden Valley Enterprises is a 501 C3 organization. For more information about making a donation go to http://www.edenvalleyenterprises.org/progdesc/gatewood/gatewooddonation.pdf. If you would like to see this one woman presentation live, follow  Edenvalleyenterprises.org. Tomorrows sold out presentation is just the first of many. Thank you for your interest and support.

The first presentation of our storytelling program GRANDMA GATEWOOD: OHIO’S LEGENDARY HIKER was a success! The audience enjoyed the story and had lots of questions afterward. One audience member wrote us afterward, “The Grandma Gatewood program is entertaining, enlightening, and wholly enjoyable.” You can see a picture from the event along with a short summary at: http://www.edenvalleyenterprises.org/progdesc/gatewood/gtwdinf.htm

Sounds like you have a lot of good memories. What is your most vivid memory of your hike with Emma? Where were you when you met up and how long did you hike together?

In1959 we lived in Junction City, Kansas. we picked up grandma gatewood and she stayed with us for 3 days. We took her back to the exact spot that we picked her up at and my mom says that i walked 2 miles with her although i dont remember the distance but i do remember walking along with her. i take care of my mom and thats what she says. we do have a newspaper article and picture somewhere that talks about our family picking up grandma gatewood and what she was accomplishing with her walk to oregon. iI wish i could read in her journal about her visit with us. i thied to reach lucy seeds on facebook last year but never got a reply.Best wishes for your project.

I checked with Lucy awhile back and she wrote back:
“Bette, I do not know the name, but Mama was hiking the Oregon
Trail. She mentions a Mrs. Barthuly, Paxico, Kan. who wouldn’t
give her a drink of water and wrote to her later and apologized and
said her husband had bawled her out. OHHH, I just found the
reference to the Coffmans. On May 10, 1959 Mama stayed with Sgt.
Dent & family and the Coffmans, a Sgt. also, came from Junction
City and she spent the next night with them. She does not mention
the boys. She said “They” Dents and Coffmans, met her on the
highway and walked back to Junction City with her. Ralph was
      probably one of “Them”. Lucy”

As for your question about what’s happening — I actually did the storytelling program three times in September and October (that makes EIGHT times so far this year!) and have another performance this Saturday, 11/10 and am scheduling performances for next year!

We are still raising money to complete the PBS documentary (you can make a tax-deductible donation at: http://edenvalleyenterprises.org/progdesc/gatewood/donate.htm ) and we completed an e-book and DVD of the storytelling program which are for sale on our website at: http://edenvalleyenterprises.org/booksoh.html#grandma

      So we’ve been busy!

Thanks for your good wishes! I hope one day you’ll get to see the documentary or the storytelling program.

Thank you for the information and pass on to lucy how much her mother has been an inspiration in my life, even now.
